With a fine arts education, her curiosity allows her to expand outside her origins of bold and graphic textiles into writing books, designing furniture, painting wall art, and creating sculptures.

HABLE FOR HICKORY CHAIR

Sisters Susan Hable Smith and Katherine Hable founded the NY-based textile company Hable Construction in 2009. Named after their Texan great-grandfather’s 20th century road construction business, they now pave roads of a different sort as leaders in textile design while expanding their studio to create furniture and decorative
accessories for the home.

Ideas are distilled from travel and life adventures to simple forms with integrity and most of all thoughtfulness.

The swivel chair has come a long way since it was invented by Thomas Jefferson. It's said that he modified the English-style Windsor chair with various parts, including casters used in rope-hung windows. Jefferson sat upon this chair when he drafted the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Style Spotted: High Point Market's Style Report

"Century introduced their Gemma Bed in collaboration with Carrier and Company. Fully upholstered and adorned with two-toned metal, its striking brass hinge detail mixed with the curvature of the bed to provide a stylish melding of masculine and feminine."

"Curvaceous lines have been a growing trend in European design over the last few years and it has definitely influenced American manufactures this season.
I loved the creative ways everyone from Ray Booth for Hickory Chair and Ralph Lauren for Visual Comfort have used these forms to great effect."

"The most prominent trend I saw at Market was the interpretation of nature,
not only in color (green) but also in product construction and application.
The Poppy Armoire by Selamat Designs is the perfect example. It's constructed of a wood frame, white lacquer doors and raised gold and rattan motif. The intricacy was exquisite, a beautiful display of natural sophistication, and a nod to Art Nouveau."

"Gilded leaves, an abundance of wicker, along with crocheted light fixtures, complete with hanging, beaded tassels (Selamat Designs), all blended together and harkened back to the Golden era of 1950's Cuba, and in more recent memory, Celerie Kemble's home in the Dominican Republic."

In mid-April, we ventured to High Point Market with the majority of our Hoff Miller crew. We had a fabulous time reconnecting with long-time friends and work associates, and we met some lovely new faces. We also had the pleasure of viewing the new collections our manufacturers have just released, while meeting the designers who've worked so hard creating their collections and putting their vignettes together at market.

While at High Point Market, we tend to have "market moments", which we've defined as those special times where we may become giddy, shell-shocked, hearts racing, or we may get touchy-feely with a fabric... you get the picture! While we all had our own "market moments" around town, our biggest collective moment was in Suzanne Kasler's space.

We were aware of the collection's name, Paris, but weren't prepared to feel as though we'd actually arrived in Paris. Suzanne Kasler truly captured the look and feel of Paris with her beautifully scaled and detailed pieces, the lovely color palette, art and florals, and soft lighting.

The Paris collection for Hickory Chair was inspired by pieces that Suzanne Kasler has collected over the years. This new collection is a sophisticated blend of intricately detailed, hand-crafted wood products, as well as tailored upholstered pieces. Throughout the elegant offerings, architectural elements are highlighted with modern details and clean lines for a timeless look.
