We recently hosted an inspiring event with Jay Pascall, General Manager of Maitland-Smith, who shared insights on the future of the company and the evolution of its celebrated craftsmanship. Designers experienced the heritage of the company, and the original vision of Paul Maitland-Smith. Jay spoke about the new vision for the company, and how they ask themselves, “What would Paul do?”.

Founded 47 years ago by antiques authority and shopkeeper Paul Maitland-Smith, the company was founded on the idea that scale, proportion, materials, and most importantly craftsmanship would be inherent in the products Maitland-Smith would offer. He honored history, mastered materials, and reinterpreted the past with confidence, curiosity and a touch of whimsy.

In reimagining Maitland-Smith for today, that same philosophy drives our company—balancing Classic and Modern design, formal and informal living, and timeless craftsmanship with a fresh, evolving point of view. Q&A With Design Director, Sarah Williamson

What was the initial spark or inspiration behind the collection?

The initial spark for these collections came from our design team recognizing the strong success Pindler has had with decorative woven fabrics, along with the growing demand from customers for performance patterned upholstery. When we began collaborating with the Crypton team, it felt like the perfect opportunity to explore this idea. Our goal was to create two timeless collections that we could continue to build upon over time—one with a classic, traditional aesthetic and the other with a more modern, contemporary perspective

How did the collection evolve from the initial concept to the final product?

Both collections evolved through a collaborative design process between our design teams. We began researching designs and selecting artwork documents that could be translated into beautiful woven fabrics. The Pindler design team worked closely with the Crypton design team to develop each pattern and carefully refine the color direction for both groups. Through this collaboration, each collection was given a distinct look and feel, with its own unique color palette and sense of style.

How does this collection reflect the current trends in design?

These collections reflect several trends we’re seeing in commercial design right now. There’s been a continued demand for classic, refined fabrics that still feel relaxed and approachable, and the Classic Wovens collection really speaks to that. The Modern Wovens collection offers a more contemporary look while still feeling effortlessly chic and easy to use in a variety of spaces. Partnering with Crypton also allowed us to meet the growing demand for performance fabrics, so both collections offer the durability and functionality designers need for many environments.

What was the goal Pindler was trying to achieve creating this collection?

Our goal was to introduce more beautiful, decorative performance fabrics to the Pindler line while launching our exciting new partnership with Crypton. Through this collaboration, we aimed to offer fabrics that combine elevated design with the performance and durability that Crypton is known for.

How important was it to source fabrics Made in the USA?

Sourcing fabrics made in the USA was an important part of this collection for us. We love supporting our domestic mills and are proud to tell our customers that these fabrics are woven here in the United States. Many designers really appreciate that detail, and it often becomes a great part of the story when presenting the collection to their clients.

Hoff Miller is bringing rustic charm and modern lodge style to the Rocky Mountains with their new line, Old Hickory Furniture.

Since 1899, Old Hickory has been handcrafted in Central Indiana and is best known for furnishing State and National Park Lodges. They’ve recently partnered with designer Max Humphrey to debut The Lodge Collection, and we love how it ties in with Max’s Sunbrella fabric collection with Pindler.

Beyond our obsession with Max Humphrey's Lodge Collection, Old Hickory itself is pretty incredible. The longevity of both the company and their furniture is rare in the furniture and design world.

Old Hickory furniture is still handcrafted and made-to-order in much the same way as it was in the 1890s. Their furniture is a slice of American history that has played a major role in the home furnishings and hospitality industry.

1904 | Dining chairs for the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone. Old Hickory was chosen by architect Robert Reamer as the finishing touches on the iconic lodge. The original chairs are still in use today.

1914 | Old Hickory furnished the lobby and porches of Lewis Glacier Lodge in the newly formed Glacier National Park. The lodge would later be renamed Lake McDonald Lodge and still has Old Hickory furniture throughout the beautiful lodge.

In our eyes, wood is much more than a raw material. It’s our inspiration. Not only that, but trees are essential for healthy ecosystems and healthy people. They create a habitat for numerous species, capture CO2, prevent soil erosion, and purify water. And as if that weren’t enough, they enhance the beauty of our landscapes. There’s no question that we want to do something to preserve and perpetuate this precious resource.

In 2017 Huppé decided to take action through Trees Canada, creating a partnership that has planted more than 8,000 trees in three years. In 2019 alone we donated $11,280 for the reforestation of five forests across Canada that had been damaged by insects, fire, or strong winds.

We’re extremely proud to have made a difference and helped bring these forests back to life and we’re committed to continuing our work with Tree Canada in the future.

Our suppliers

At the heart of our furniture manufacturing process lies our commitment to sustainability and eco-responsibility. We place great importance on selecting materials and local suppliers, prioritizing geographical proximity to reduce our carbon footprint.

Furthermore, many of our fabrics come from Crevin, a renowned company known for its highly environmentally friendly practices. Crevin leads the "Road to Zero" initiative, a bold approach aiming to achieve zero impact in textile production, focusing on zero waste, zero water, and zero CO2 emissions.
